Your introduction to Milan

Milan is a lively city, rich in art, history and culture, and is the business, design and fashion centre of Italy. With many interesting sights, Milan is also Italy's main communications and transport hub (having two main airports in the one city, Milan Linate airport, and Milan Malpensa airport) as well as the economic heart of the country. Milan offers visitors a fascinating mix of modern innovation and deep-seated cultural tradition.

Home to the world-famous opera house Teatro alla Scala, the outstanding Duomo (cathedral) and Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, Milan is also famed for its attentiveness of designer shops and boutiques, very apparent in the cutting-edge dress sense of the Milanese. Milan also features the Conservatory of Music, the Art Academy and a long list of famous art galleries and libraries.

The view from the top of the Duomo is captivating, with views over Milan and even as far as the Alps. From here you can look down on the glass dome of one of the world's most prestigious shopping malls, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and view the Quadrilatero designer shopping district, around Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga.

Many of Milan's most select restaurants can be found in the centre, you can indulge in regional dishes such as risotto alla Milanese or osso buco. Other appealing areas in Milan to eat out include the Navigli, Brera and Corso Como districts, which also have offer a variety of nightclubs.

When in the Brera district, visit the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of Milan's finest art galleries with works by Canaletto, Raphael, Rubens and Van Dyck. The other gallery not to be missed is the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana with Titian's Adoration of the Magi and Caravaggio's well-known Basket of Fruit.
