Your introduction to Bergamo

The oldest part of Bergamo town is enclosed within walls, and sits up on the hill while the modern centre has developed on the plane. Venice and Bergamo are very close, both from a historical and cultural point of view. Bergamo has an intenational airport bringing many tourists in every year.

Developing for more than five kilometres, the still well preserved town walls circling Bergamo on the hill are one of the most important evidence of barricades of the fifth century. Venice started their building in 1516 thus making Bergamo a fortress on the boundary with the State of Milan.

After being amazed at the delightful skyline of towers and bell towers, those who want to reach the upper town have to go through the town walls. The Castle of S. Vigilio, once part of the ancient fortification, offers you one of the best views of the old town.

Two different cable operated cars take people from downtown, and either to the Castle or to the upper town. The old town lays amongst the greenery, to the advantage of the landscape. The territory, included in the regional park of Bergamo, is packed with villas, farmhouses, vegetable gardens, gardens, woods and also houses the former monastery of Astino.

The Accademia Carrara, the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Natural Science Museum and the Archaeological Museum, are important cultural areas of Bergamo and well worth a visit.

The distinguishing alleys, old city centres, with their shops and handicrafts are always full of people, and make a great day out to do those little bits of shopping.
