Alghero

Your introduction to Alghero

Alghero gets its name from the mass of seaweed in the surrounding waters.

Alghero is situated on the shores of a beautiful bay on the northwest coast of Sardinia. It’s the tourist centre of the Coral Riviera. Alghero’s international fame is due mostly to the clever and rational use of the incomparable beauties of its untouched landscape and the outstanding organisation of incoming tourism, most of which coming from Alghero airport.

There are fantastic views along the 75 km of coastline stretching from the limestone promontory of Capo Caccia to the North and the beach of La Speranza on the South. Everything is here for a relaxing holiday; superb beaches, mind blowing cliffs, rocky coastline, wonderful coves and superb marine caves. The clear sea is ideal for red coral and lobsters!

Alghero is a fishing port. It consists of a picturesque and well-preserved old town surrounded by walls, outside of which the new town has a grid of opposite streets filled with hotels and restaurants.

A favoured package tour destination, Alghero offers beautiful beaches and year-round holiday amenities together with numerous places of interest to visit. The town is very Spanish in flavour having been invaded by Pedro IV of Aragon in 1354. The narrow cobbled streets of the old town are lined with flamboyant churches and wrought-iron balconies, boutiques and cafes, as well as the workshops of craftsmen working the famed coral of Alghero.

The local cuisine hints of Spain too, and the town is renowned for its excellent seafood. Authentic Spanish paellas, lobster alla Catalana and tasty fish soups abound, with delicious sea urchins on sale from stallholders in the port.

Inland luxuriant vineyards produce some of the most aromatic wines on the island. Nightlife is calm, more sipping cocktails on a sidewalk café, and watching the sunset from the seafront than clubbing.
